With the pre-season winding down, the Mississippi Delta Community College Trojan baseball team is making its final tweaks for MACCC conference action. Trojan Baseball Head Coach Luke Stanley is looking for an always-tough go round but notes his team is ready to rumble in the nation’s toughest league.
“We’ve played some good competition so far, seen some good arms and good hitters. Our players have performed well enough to be ready,” Coach Stanley said. “I feel like our guys are ready to get conference play going.”
The MACCC has East Central undefeated at 21-0, Jones close behind at 17-4, Pearl River at 19-5, Northwest at 12-4 and Mississippi Gulf Coast at 13-5 for the five top slots. In the NJCAA DII National rankings, the MACCC is well represented. Pearl River comes in at #3, East Central at #10 and Meridian at #13.
“Meridian may have fallen the past few weeks but they were highly ranked and we had two really good games with them,” Coach Stanley said. “We had two really good games with Northwest and Hinds the same week. The guys have been pretty well offensively and we’ve had some ups and downs on the mound.”
Coach Stanley pointed out several players who are getting it done for the Trojans.
“(Sophomore) Foster Mitchell one of our outfielders has been swinging it really well. He and (freshman catcher) Cade Oswalt and (freshman outfielder) John Barajas have swung it well. We’ve had quite a few guys swinging well,” he said. “(Freshman catcher) Drew Jerrell has done pretty good as well.”
On the mound, “(Sophomore) Tate Anderson has really showed out his last two performances. He went six innings against Meridian and he had a seven-inning shutout the other day. He’s really throwing it well right now and his stuff has been really good so far. I’m really happy with him.”
The Trojans start conference play on Saturday, March 9 at Mississippi Gulf Coast for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
They travel to East Mississippi on Wednesday, March 13 before hosting their home conference opener with Pearl River coming to the Jimmy Bellipanni Baseball Complex on Saturday, March 16 at 1:00 p.m.
“There will be some really good baseball for the next few weeks,” Coach Stanley said. “Get to Moorhead and you’ll see some good teams and good players.”
Home games will be streamed on the MDCC Trojans YouTube channel. For a full schedule, check out MDCCTrojans.com.
