With a trip to Pearl River Community College this weekend, the Mississippi Delta Community College Trojans are looking for more conference wins. Currently sitting at 5-12-1 (Wednesday’s matchup with East was prior to press time), the Trojans, 1-1 in MACCC face a 1-1 Pearl River team that is 20-4 overall. Jones College and East Central share the early conference lead at 2-0. The Trojans split the double-header with Gulf Coast this past weekend, an 8-2 loss in game one but a 16-8 game two win.
“It went well, I thought we played pretty well at Gulf Coast,” Head Coach Luke Stanley said. “I thought our pitching did all right in game one. We had a couple of errors that got us.”
In game two, a late surge of offense – 11 runs – put the Trojans in the winners seat.
“We pitched it pretty well that day. We had some guys in the bullpen who stepped up,” he said. “It was a good day. Entertaining games and a lot of fans.”
The Trojans are still experiencing a wet field. Wednesday’s game with East Mississippi was juggled and needed a temporary home field at press time. The Trojans won’t be back on their home grass until Saturday, March 25 when they host Southwest Mississippi. Coach Stanley knows the MACCC is one wild west shootout with plenty of talent scattered around the league. It’s anybody’s game when the teams line up.
“East Mississippi is pretty good offensively. They are pretty physical at the plate,” he said. “From top to bottom, the MACCC is a really good league. Anytime you go out you’re facing top notch players. Good players and good coaches – we face the best ones in the country.”
Looking at his team’s individual performances, leadoff hitter Wes Warnock has been hot all year.
“He’d done a fantastic job in the outfield. He’s got on base all 18 games this year. He’s batting .405 and has really showed out,” Coach Stanley said.
On the pitching front, Colby Lafayette “has done a fine job out of the bullpen. I look for him to get more innings. Coach (Tyler) Milligan has done a great job with those guys keeping their arms healthy and managing them. Their conditioning and weight room program they’ve taken seriously.”
