With a week of rain wreaking havoc on MACCC baseball action, the Mississippi Delta Community College Trojans moved their home date with the Coahoma Community College Tigers. The original Tuesday doubleheader was moved to Tuesday and the Trojans picked up both conference wins – 5-0 and a tough 5-4 game two win.
In game one, the Trojans picked up a run in the third inning and piled on four more in the bottom of the sixth to pick up win number 15 on the year. JP Allen didn’t allow a single run and only allowed five hits in picking up the win for the Trojans. Cade Oswalt’s single in the third scored the first run. In the sixth, Drew Jarrell tripled, Brennan Surles singled and Blake Chanell homered to right field as each batter picked up an RBI – Chanell had two. The Trojans had 11 hits in 34 at bats with five RBIs. Allen threw all nine innings giving up four walks and striking out three. He threw 121 pitches in the game.
In game two, Coahoma jumped out to a 3-0 led in the second inning but the Trojans rallied for a run in the bottom of the third and added three more in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-3 lead. Then the Tigers picked up a run in the top of the sixth to tie the game before the Trojans scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to retake and hold the lead in the seven inning game two win, 5-4. Surles, Owen Gayden and Chanell combined for four of the team’s seven hits.
Colby Lafayette started on the mound and gave up six hits and four runs (three earned) over seven innings. He struck out three and walked two.
The Trojans are off until Saturday when they begin a homestand that begins with Hinds Community College, followed by Itawamba Community College on Wednesday, April 17 and then Jones College on Saturday, April 20. The Trojans will end the regular season on the road traveling to Northeast on Wednesday, April 24 and then head to Meridian Community College on Saturday, April 27.
Current standings in the MACCC include Pearl River at #1 at 18-0 in conference play and 38-5 overall. Northwest is #2 at 15-3 in the MACCC and 30-11 overall. East Central and Jones College are tied for third with 13-3 MACCC records. Mississippi Gulf Coast and East are tied at fourth with 11-7 MACCC records. The Trojans are tied at the eighth spot with Southwest as they both have 7-11 MACCC records.
On the NJCAA DII Standings, Pearl River is #4 overall, Jones it at #8 and Northwest is at #16.
