The more it rains, the more it rains havoc on sports schedule makers and field maintenance folks.
The most recent downpour forced the Mississippi Delta Community College Trojans baseball team to seek dryer ground. On Tuesday, a home game was moved from The Jimmy Bellipanni Baseball Complex to Holmes Community College. The Trojans took game one 14-6, but dropped the second game of the double-header 6-4. Overall, the Trojans stand at 10-19-1 and 6-8 in the MACCC. Holmes fell to 6-24 overall and 2-12 in the conference.
In the win, the Trojans collected 11 hits in 34 at bats and had 13 RBIs and 13 walks. Only two Trojans struck out in the win. DH Channing Lackey had six RBIs, two walks while going 3-for-4 at the plate. Dylan Dendy was 3-for-6 at the plate with two RBIs.
Holmes had 10 hits in 36 at bats that also included a home run.
The Trojans’ road trip to Co-Lin on Friday, March 31, was a split as the Trojans lost game one 4-0, but took the second game win 15-8. In the loss, the Trojans eked out two hits in 29 at bats while Co-Lin had seven hits in 31 at bats. Colby Lafayette took the loss on the mound. He put in six innings and gave up four hits and three runs (two earned), walked five and struck out five. Jacob Brooks finished the last two innings giving up three hits and one run while striking out one.
In the game two win, the Trojans had 16 hits but also committed four errors. Warnock led the way going 4-for-5 at the plate with three RBIs. Dylan Denby was 3-for-5 at the plate with three RBIs as well. Nick Kockza picked up the win going four innings giving up seven hits and seven runs (five earned) and walked two batters. JP Allen pitched the final three innings giving up three hits and one run – earned – and struck out one while giving up a home run.
Taking a quick look at the MACCC, at press time Jones College led the conference with a 27-6 overall and 12-1 conference record. East Central stands in second place at 21-13 overall and 11-2 in the MACCC. Meridian and Pearl River are neck and neck as Meridian is 26-8 overall and 12-4 in the MACCC while Pearl River is at 30-7 overall and 11-4 in conference play. Northwest is the only other team with double digit conference wins at 10-4 and 22-12 overall.
On the national rankings through NJCAA DII, Pearl River – the defending National Champion – is ranked fourth while Meridian is fifth. Jones stands at eighth. LSU-Eunice is currently the top ranked JUCO team in the country with a perfect 34-0 record.
Next up for the Trojans includes hosting (field and weather permitting) East Central today and then travel to Coahoma on Wednesday, April 12. MDCC has plans to upgrade the baseball field after the season to help with drainage issues.
