As a concerned citizen of Sunflower County, I feel compelled to address several critical issues that have been prevalent within our school district. While there have been commendable improvements in areas such as test scores, it is equally important to recognize the significant room for improvement in terms of professionalism, accountability, and safety.
I want to emphasize that I have been a supporter of the school district, even during difficult times such as the closure of Inverness Elementary School (IES).
While I personally disagreed with the decision and believed that more could have been done to save lES, l understood the financial and business considerations that led to that conclusion. It is crucial to note that my concerns stem from a place of accountability rather than opposition to the school district.
Our school district's mission statement emphasizes the importance of Empowering Staff, Engaging Communities, and Educating Students. It is imperative that the actions of the district align with its own mission statement. The school district must empower its staff to create a safe and supportive environment for all individuals within the school community. This includes fostering a culture where students, parents, staff members, including teachers, principals, central office staff, superintendent, and school board members, feel valued, respected, and supported in their roles.
In addition, the school district must engage with the community it serves, valuing the input of parents and citizens as partners in the education of our students. Individual parents feel that their concerns are not taken seriously on an individual level by teachers, principals, central office staff, school board members, and the superintendent. It is essential that the school district fosters an environment where parents feel heard and valued.
Maintaining professionalism in all aspects, especially in communication, whether written or verbal, is essential for the central office staff of a school district. Clear and respectful communication not only fosters a positive and cooperative environment within the district but also reflects the district's commitment to excellence to its students, parents, and the community at large. Professionalism in all aspects is a cornerstone of building trust and upholding the district's reputation for transparency and integrity.
Safety at some of the schools within the district is a serious concern and needs to be addressed. There have been reports of horrific fights between students, staff, parents, and family members, captured on video at schools within the district.
The lack of visible security during such incidents raises serious questions about the protocols in place to handle these situations. While it may not be possible to prevent all incidents, it is imperative that the school district has robust protocols in place to ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals within the school environment, especially given the current state of affairs across the country.
The school district must prioritize the safety and well-being of all individuals within the school environment, aligning with its mission to engage communities and ensure a secure learning environment for our students.
Furthermore, there have been reports of a toxic, and intimidating work environment within the school district, where staff members feel bullied and threatened by upper management and school board members. It is essential to create a safe and supportive workplace for all staff members, and the school district must address these concerns promptly and effectively.
It is my hope that by addressing these issues, we can work together to create a school district that truly belongs to the citizens it serves. It is crucial for the school district to take these concerns seriously and to prioritize the well-being of both staff and students. I believe that fostering accountability, professionalism, and safety will lead to a stronger and more supportive educational environment for everyone involved, in line with the mission of our school district to produce Solid, Sound, and Secure Students.
We(Citizens & Educators) all share a responsibility to ensure that our school district reflects the highest standards of excellence and care. Let us work together to bring about positive change and uphold the values that our community holds dear.
Let’s Work Together.
Sincerely,
Steven Jarrod Smith
