Do you know the difference between a moment and a movement? A moment is temporary; once it happens, the moment is gone and believed to never happen again.
A movement, on the other hand, is continuous; it’s a change in one’s placement, position and/or posture. According to Superintendent Miskia Davis, “Sunflower County Consolidated School District is a movement.” SCCSD is on the move, and there’s no slowing down in sight.
At Tuesday’s district-wide convocation, the school board, central office staff, administrators, other school staff (cafeteria, janitorial, maintenance), and educators from all over the district gathered at Gentry High School to kick off the school year with food, fellowship, fun and facts about where the district is headed. For the 2023-2024 school year, each school in the district is hopeful to be the same or a letter grade better than the previous year.
Excitement is in the air about where the district is headed. Superintendent Davis came on board in 2017, when it was a failing district. Upon entering the door and seeing the need for teachers, materials, and money that the district didn’t have, she felt she was not ready to take the helm as leader of the district. Her “ironing board experience” is what changed her mind, her heart, and her perspective. “During my ironing board experience,” Superintendent Davis said, “God told me that He would give me people who have a heart for children. He would provide the Sunflower County Consolidated School District with everything it needed to reach its destiny.”
…And God has done just that. In the span of 6 years, SCCSD has gone from a failing school district (F) to a successful school district (B) under Superintendent Davis’s leadership. School Board President Reverend Edward Thomas referred to her as a godsend, because she was the light the district needed during some of its darkest times. Because of her passion, diligence, and persistence, she was awarded the “Killing It” award during the convocation. She indeed deserves that award because she is killing it; the district is currently labeled as a High Performing School District, with no failing schools in the district, and all but two deemed successful or higher.
Someone told Superintendent Davis that the district’s success is a moment, but the track record shows that SCCSD is a movement! The progress has been continuous and amazing. The success in our district is unmistakable, and an “A” is in sight.
A Prayer for Educators
By Camilla Potts
Most gracious Heavenly Father,
Thank You for another school year. Thank You for another chance to positively mold the minds of youth. Today, I lift all teachers to You. I pray for Your anointing upon our lives, our work, and our ministries.
Please give us wisdom, knowledge, guidance, patience, love, protection, understanding, insight, and everything we need to be a positive life-changing influence upon those we teach. I pray that You will keep us safe from all harm and evil. Please bring to our minds the lessons and information we need to teach and the ability to do what is good, right, and best in every situation. I pray that each one will see our profession and calling as teachers, not as a job, but as an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of our students and to always show Your love to others.
Please help us to be salt and light for You in this world. May we rely on Your strength and grace each and every day to accomplish what You would have us do. Bless all teachers, Father, as Your servants. And may we be a blessing to all others with whom we live, work, and teach.
In Jesus' name I pray,
Amen.
