For the first time in SCCSD’s and the school’s history, Thomas E. Edwards Senior High School is rated a Successful school.
In the wake of construction, arson and other issues that might normally have had a negative impact on the academic success of the school, TEHS defied the odds on the last go-round of State testing and came out a “B”-rated school.
Last Thursday, administrators, teachers, scholars and parents gathered in the school’s gymnasium to celebrate those students who scored proficient and advanced on the subject-area tests as well as those who met growth in those subject areas.
When I asked Chiquita Bracey, the school’s academic coach, why celebrating student success is imperative, she responded, “The TEHS administration team needs to celebrate our students’ success because it creates a positive school culture where the students feel valued. Furthermore, celebrations help to foster strong relationships with students and their families, faculty, and the community. In simple terms, celebrations motivate students to do better. Research says that it is important to recognize and celebrate students for their outstanding academic and extracurricular accomplishments.”
The Successful school rating of a “B” means that TEHS has emerged as one of the top schools in the Mississippi Delta and that a rigorous academically-aligned curriculum enables students to excel academically and compete globally after graduating.
Bracey said, “A “B” rating will let our students know that they can achieve at the highest level once they exit TEHS whether that’s college, military, or the workforce. Our students will be equipped with skills that will help foster lifelong skills.”
TEHS’ administration team, faculty, staff, and students have set their eyes on the “big prize” of becoming a Successful “A” rated school for the 2023-2024 school year.
They would like to serve as a model school for the Mississippi Delta under the leadership of Principal Errick Lakes.
The final thing Bracey wanted to share was: “TEHS’ “B” school rating speaks volumes to the hard work and sacrifice that SCCSD Superintendent Dr. Davis demonstrates to ensure that TEHS has all the academic resources to grow teachers and students. TEHS Principal Lakes’ commitment is shown through his desire to create learning systems at TEHS to promote a positive school culture, foster student growth, and retain highly-qualified teachers. Mr. Lakes is passionate about all faculty and staff receiving professional development that will promote academic excellence for all students. TEHS faculty and staff have worked tirelessly to dedicate their teaching expertise to all students and promote classroom cultures that are conducive to all learners. The TEHS administration team would like to thank the SCCSD Board of Trustees, Superintendent Dr. Davis, TEHS faculty and staff, parents, students, and the community of Ruleville for all the unwavering support that we have received to make the “B” school rating possible.”
