Booking number 2022000338 from the Sunflower County Sheriff’s Department belongs to Lawrence Brown. At first glance, the name and the Canton, Mississippi address listed on the report may cause for a cursory read of the report. But the photo and the details of the record show a very well-known Indianola former alderman better known as Larry Brown.
On the morning of September 2, Sunflower County law enforcement officials arrested Brown for “sexual battery, unlawful penetration of a child under the age of 14 and touching for lustful purposes by a person over 18.” The language of the arrest report went on to add the descriptors, “gratification molestation.” Brown’s bond in the case was set at $35,000. According to Sunflower County Sheriff James Haywood, Brown turned himself in and later posted bail. The arrest was prompted by a 2019 case that the state attorney general’s office took up from June of that year.
According to District Attorney Dewayne Richardson, “That is actually the attorney general’s office that is prosecuting this case. Sexual battery of a child under 14 has a minimum penalty of 20 years and a maximum of life; molesting or fondling, which is the touching or rubbing of a child, has a minimum of 2 years and a max of 15 years.”
Arraignment for Brown is set for October 3 at 1 p.m. in Sunflower County Circuit Court.
The Enterprise-Tocsin contacted Attorney General Lynn Fitch’s office pursuant to why the case was reopened, but did not receive any information to that effect by press time.
