Center CME Church’s Annual Black History Program tried to answer this question on Sunday during their Annual Black History Observance.
With the theme of “Celebrating Black History from Chains to Change,” the youth presented “Africa Proud,” based on a poem by Wayne Visser that included famous people who experienced the chains of slavery’s past but who also helped to bring about the changes that we are enjoying today.
The skit went from Shaka Zulu to former President Barack Obama. The speaker, Harold Lathon, a Recovery Directorate for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, expounded on the program’s theme and included a video that suggested that African-Americans are descendants of Noah’s son, Ham.
Mr. Lathon also distributed two books to the youth to encourage them to learn more about their history.
As Erica D. Williams stated, “As African-Americans, we think we know our roots because we celebrate our ancestors in February… but do we?” Ms. Hale, the program’s sponsor, stated, “Today’s program was truly an educational experience for us all.
