The City of Indianola’s law enforcement liability policy was not renewed for 2024.
Doug Russell, with Indianola Insurance, was on hand during this past Monday night’s meeting of the mayor and board of aldermen, and he said that this development is the only hiccup thus far in the renewal of the city’s multiple insurance policies.
“We are currently working with that situation now,” Russell said, noting they are getting quotes from several companies.
Russell was there to give an update on the city’s insurance renewal. He will likely return in December to offer quotes to the board.
Russell could not offer specifics in terms of the police department’s liability claims, but at the request of Ward 4 Alderman Marvin Elder, he did say that there are currently five open claims accumulating expenses.
“What I have recorded is five open claims from law enforcement, meaning all five of those claims are not settled,” Russell said.
Russell explained that each law enforcement liability claim has a deductible of $10,000.
“So, the city has to meet that first $10,000 on any law enforcement claim,” he said.
Of those five, he noted as much as $39,880 in expenses thus far on one, $25,000 on another, $31,000 on another and $8,500 on a fourth.
“The claim is open,” he said. “The meter is running.”
Ward 2 Alderman Darrell Simpson asked how many of those claims were from 2023.
Russell said two of them are from this year.
Russell said he should have quotes on all policies, including the city’s general liability policy and a separate policy on the airport by next month.
