Knock it down, and build a new building.
That is getting closer to reality for the Sunflower County Justice Court building on Main Street.
During Monday’s meeting, the board reviewed two bids that were received for the demolition of the structure, which was vacated several months ago by the county. The companies that placed bids were Wilkerson Trucking Inc. and David Smith Construction Inc. Both companies provided a base bid and two alternate bids.
Wilkerson Trucking Inc. had a proper bid bond and 5% of the bid amount. The company’s base bid was $85,000, alternate one was $22,500 and alternate two was $8,000. Architect Emily Poole explained to the county the meaning of the bids and the difference in the alternates.
“The base bid is the basic demolition of the building including six inches below the footing and then they will top the side off,” she said. “Alternate number one includes the additional coring out of the site of the 36 inches we originally proposed and then putting that much dirt back in that will give us the site fully prepared for the building. Alternate number two has to do with the limestone gravel that will be provided in the alleyway. The alleyway is currently concrete but it is in poor condition and when we put trucks on it for demolition it is going to continue to tear that concrete up. This would be a temporary repair so that alleyway is still useable and the concrete in the alleyway would be constructed after the completion of the new building. That is putting gravel there to keep that alleyway useable.”
Sunflower County District 1 Supervisor Glenn Donald said, “If we are going to entertain it just for demolition, do the base bid of $85,000 and let whoever builds it do the alternate stuff. Because, especially on alternate two, our road department can bring limestone in, and we don’t have to pay anybody to do that.”
The second company that presented a bid was David Smith Construction Inc. Their base bid was $80,000, alternate one was $20,000 and alternate bid two was $7500.
The board approved awarding David Smith Construction Inc. to demolish the building for the base bid only at $80,000.
