Not only do the winter months bring chilly weather, but they are also a time when many house fires occur.
Some house fires are preventable.
Following these tips could keep families safe during the final 68 days of the season.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, "More home fires occur during the winter months than any other season of the year."
Otha James, Captain/Fire Investigator for twenty years in Indianola, recommends special care when using space heaters in the home.
Most people use extension cords when using space heaters. The state marshal’s office recommends not using extension cords but plugging the heating equipment directly into the wall," detailed James.
The heater must be 3 feet away from furniture and curtains. The radiant heat can lead to a house fire.
Never use the stove as a heating source; it causes a buildup of carbon monoxide in the home.
When the lights are out (power outage), never ignite wood in the gas/electric stove.
Never use a barbeque grill or charcoal inside of the home to stay warm.
Ensure the home is insulated and fills gaps and cracks around windows and doors.
Limit the use of going outside of the home. Keep the door closed to maintain heat inside.
Bring pets and plants in during hard freeze.
Stock up on food and water supply in case stores are closed.
Keep water faucets dripping to avoid freezing pipes.
Check on older adults in the neighborhood.
Have enough layers of clothes on to stay warm.
Do not use extensions to plug refrigerators, microwaves, and air conditioners. Extension cords overheat, which may lead to a house fire.
Be sure to be attentive to the stove when cooking. Do not leave food items cooking on the stovetop; it is one of the leading causes of house fires.
James stated that the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) mobile phone app is necessary during winter weather alerts. Information is updated and accurate. The app includes: news, ask MEMA, disaster guide, traffic, websites, report damage, county EMA, power outages, and shelter information.
According to the MEMA website, the app is free to download and available to iPhone and Android phone users by searching for MEMA in the iPhone or Android app store. Google www.msema.org.
"Staying weather-current and practicing safety this winter is important," shared James.
