Fireworks, fireworks and more fireworks.
The City of Indianola announced at this past Monday’s board meeting that a major fireworks display is in the works for the week of July 4.
Mayor Ken Featherstone told the board that the public event will take place on July 2, starting at 5 p.m. at Fletcher Park. Featherstone said a food truck festival from 5 p.m. until around 8 p.m. is in the works as well, and that will culminate with the 8:45 p.m. fireworks show.
Featherstone noted that he had spoken with members of Indianola Chamber Main Street, among many other organizations, to partner and help with the event.
The fireworks show itself will be operated by Big Pop Inc., which has already surveyed the area to set up parameters for safety.
“We will start with two-inch shells and work our way up to six-inch shells, reaching a height of 600 feet in the air, and I'm looking for a grand finale for you all to end the night with,” said Big Pop owner David Chancellor.
The food truck festival will end at 8:15, Featherstone said, and they will begin setting up for the fireworks event.
Featherstone noted that he had already briefed the fire and police departments and a safety plan will be in place.
“We want to make this event as big as we can and make it very festive for the city,” said Featherstone.
Featherstone also said there would be activities for kids, like a bouncy house.
Parking will be available on the sides of Second Street and Main Street. No streets will be blocked; traffic can travel without interruptions, Featherstone said.
This fireworks event costs $10,000, which will come from professional services in the executive budget, Featherstone said.
The board did have some questions regarding the day of the event. It was suggested that the 4th, 5th or 6th might be better days for turnout. Featherstone said that Big Pop was booked for those days and the long weekend might see many people already traveling after Wednesday.
The last fireworks show the city of Indianola held was in 2019.
