The citizens of Moorhead did not take Earth Day lightly this year.
Last Saturday, the town showed up for a day of community service that included opportunities to help feed needy families and clean up the area.
“April 22nd was Earth Day,” said Thelma Holland Green. “This was a multipurpose event. We wanted to reach out to the community to set aside a day to take pride in our town and help pick up trash. We also wanted to give back to our families by distributing food boxes and to provide grant information to families who needed assistance with home repairs.”
Moorhead is Green’s hometown.
It had always been her dream, she said, to return home once she retired.
After working 38 years as an educator in Anguilla and Fort Wayne, Indiana, her dream became a reality in 2016 and now she’s in her happy place.
The event that sparked the motivation behind the community cleanup was a meeting held with the City of Moorhead, representatives from Hope Federal Credit Union, Delta Design Build Workshop, Delta Advantage Center and community members.
The meeting was held to brainstorm what is needed to spur growth in the city.
Delta Design Build Workshop would develop the strategic plan but wanted an opportunity to gather more input from the community. The committee included Michelle Stadelman from Delta Design, Delta Advantage Center’s board of directors, Mayor George Holland, City Manager Robert Martin and Hope Federal Credit Union reps.
Green said she was delighted with the turnout and the work that was completed.
“The event was very successful,” she said. “We distributed food to more than 200 families. We didn’t have many people participating in the clean-up but are appreciative of all who did participate. Delta Design provided grilled hot dogs, water and chips to people who came to the Delta Advantage Center to pick up boxes. A special thank you to our two student volunteers, Samaya Smith and Clarencia Calvert.”
The event took place at Delta Advantage Center, which is formerly known as Allen Canning Company.
Delta Advantage Center is a 501c3 organization that provides food to area families experiencing food insecurity and operates with the belief that each of us has the responsibility for undertaking actions that will create a better quality of life for ourselves.
