Inverness has a new police chief who made a mark immediately upon being sworn into office Friday. Bennie Milton became the first woman as the head of a municipal police department in Sunflower County.

Problems of contraband being smuggled into the Sunflower County Jail will be made minimal if Sunflower County Supervisors pass a proposal to reestablish a commissary system, Jail Administrator Billy Weeks said Monday.

An elderly Indianola woman has learned that thieves can ferret out your money no matter how unusual the hiding place — even under a wig. A 77-year-old Coates Street resident told police that she was robbed in her home of $530 in cash from beneath her wig.

Five Indianola Academy Junior High Band members have been named to the Intermediate Mississippi All State Orchestra Festival. Chosen for the honor were Mary Frances Hull, Rita Fratesi, Allen Hart, Charles Wade and Debbie Sharp.
