Sunflower County mothers and expectant mothers recently had a chance to learn about the resources offered by a Delta-based organization.
And a few of them went home with some prizes.
Plan A held a community baby shower last Thursday at the National Guard Armory building.
At the event, a lot of information was given on maternal health, which is the health and well-being of women during pregnancy.
“There are so many resources available in the Delta, but a lot of people don’t know about them, and being able to bring everyone to one setting and having access to this type of information is very valuable.” said Sunflower Mayor Desiree Norwood, who also represented Plan A at the event.
Plan A offers access to quality health care, support services and resources to ensure a safe and positive pregnancy and delivery experience.
“Some of the disparities that makes maternal health critical is due to a lack of access to quality healthcare, social economic factors and other barriers.” said Meta Anderson, a child family nurse practitioner.
One of the main reasons the community baby shower was held is to bring awareness to the Delta-specifically Sunflower County, Norwood said.
“Plan A understands that other counties have these types of events. We wanted to bring it to a centralized location so that all communities can join,” said Norwood.
Not only was a lot of information being offered, but Plan A also gave prizes to the mothers, served lots of refreshments and had a bouncy house so the kids could also enjoy the event.
Some of the prizes were car seats, toys, a baby formula dispenser, bathtubs, cakes, baby car mirrors and more.
Anderson said, “Plan A is here to help improve maternal well-being by promoting the overall well-being of the mother and their baby by collaborating with local OBGYNs and other health care organizations.”
Antoinette Roby, a Plan A driver who has been with the company since it began, helps members of the community who do not have access to transportation.
Some services are offered on Plan A’s mobile unit such as STD screenings, HIV screenings, mammogram referrals, pediatric services and most birth control methods.
The STD and HIV screenings are free, the organization said. Plan A has a clinic as well.
The Louise Community Clinic is located at 1454 Main Street, Louise, Mississippi 39097. The clinic is open on the 15th and 30th of every month.
Other services that are offered at the clinic are dental and telehealth appointments.
