Moorhead Police Chief Joe Wilson Jr. said that he is there to stay.
Wilson told The Enterprise-Tocsin that he did interview for the open police chief job in Belzoni, but he decided to decline the offer.
“I did interview for the job. However, after getting some of the information, I decided that it wasn’t for me,” Wilson said.
A newspaper report had Wilson accepting the Belzoni job.
“After much thought, I said, ‘No, I’m going to stay in Moorhead.’ But it actually got out and blew up before I could make any sort of conversations with anyone,” Wilson said.
Wilson has been Moorhead’s top cop since September, and he said that he loves the town and the people there.
“I’m the chief of police in Moorhead. That’s where I want to be. I love it in Moorhead, and I think the citizens deserve the very best of me, and I’m going to continue to strive to provide that,” he said.
Wilson and his seven officers are currently targeting gun crimes and are trying to cut down on shootings there.
He has spearheaded the Fresh Start program to target young men who may not have graduated from high school in an attempt to get them on a career path.
He also secured two used police cruisers from the City of Indianola, which were donated earlier this year.
