It required three exciting overtimes to get the job done.
Despite that extended football game, for the Thomas Edwards High Tigers (2-4, 1-0) the result was well worth the effort last Friday night.
Playing in Greenwood, the Tigers claimed a hard-fought 14-8 regional victory over the now 1-5, 0-1 Amanda Elzy High Panthers to get back into the win column.
“It was a much-needed win,” noted Edwards’ Head Coach Demaris Mitchell. “We missed a lot of opportunities but managed to get the job done in the end.”
Suffering five lost fumbles in the red zone during their night’s play, the Tigers would ultimately use a Ja’Kell Allen five yard pass to Patrick Kince to finally post the deciding points in the third stanza of overtime play.
With that win in the books, Region 3-3A action continues this Friday when the Tigers hit the road again.
On this occasion, it will be to Belzoni where Humphreys County High School will serve as the competition.
This 7 p.m. contest will see a 2-4, 1-0 Cowboys squad attempt to pick up their second regional victory of the season.
Last week, the Cowboys claimed a COVID-generated forfeit victory over Yazoo County High School.
Two weeks ago, Humphreys County picked up their first win of the season with a 28-12 decision over Leland High School.
Historically, while Edwards High owns a four game win streak over Humphreys County, this series is deadlocked as both schools have won 10 games apiece over the years.
In last week’s victory over Elzy High, the Tigers’ Antonio Gordon would score on a first period, three yard run to account for his team’s other touchdown.
However, it would ultimately be Allen’s successful two point conversion run which proved to be the deciding factor in enabling the Edwards High squad to reach overtime play.
