Thomas Edwards scheduled to start season at Port Gibson
It has been a long time coming for the Thomas Edwards High Tigers football team.
With the wait now over, the Tigers will take a Friday trip from Ruleville to a never-before-played school to open their 2021 football season.
With kickoff slated for 7 p.m., the Tigers will visit Port Gibson High School where they will finally play a high school football game.
However, the Tigers did receive some limited live action last Friday night when they scrimmaged Leland High School to a scoreless deadlock.
That evening of scrimmage hosted by Greenville High School afforded the Tigers “a good opportunity to play some ball and the kids really enjoyed it,”,said Edwards High Head Coach Demaris Mitchell.
“I expect the kids to come out this Friday night energized to play some good football,” he noted.
As for their upcoming competition, the Region 3-3A member Tigers will face the Port Gibson High Blue Wave, a Region 7-3A member which was able to play three games during the COVID-afflicted 2020 season.
The Blue Wave lost all three of those late-season contests after finishing the 2019 campaign with a 1-10 record.
During that same 2019 season, the Tigers were accumulating a 4-7 record.
Historically, the last winning season posted by a Port Gibson High team occurred in the 2017 season when the Blue Wave completed that campaign with a 9-4 record.
It was during that successful 2017 season that the Blue Wave defeated a team very familiar to the Tigers.
That season’s Port Gibson High squad earned a 14-6 decision over Edwards High’s cross-county foe Gentry High School.
