Colonels look to rebound with home match against Lee
It is on to week two of their schedule for the Indianola Academy Colonels football team.
Following a 47-7 season-opening road loss to a very strong Tri-County Academy last Friday night, the Colonels will now begin the three-game run of Legion Field contests next up on their schedule.
It will be a very familiar opponent, Lee Academy of Clarksdale, who will be coming to town to begin this elongated string of home dates.
Game time for this Friday’s clash between the District 1-4A Colts and the District 2-4A Colonels is set for 7 p.m.
In assessing last week’s loss to Tri-County Academy in Flora, IA Head Coach Tommy Nester noted “We did some good things but we have to do a better job of blocking and tackling. We just need to keep our heads up and work hard to get better each week.”
The Rebels entered last Friday’s game as the preseason No. 1 pick among 4A schools and used a punishing ground game and swarming defense to help live up to their billing.
The Colonels avoided a shutout late in the third period of this contest when senior running back Leland Selby scampered 12 yards around the right side for the score. Wade Lang’s successful PAT kick then concluded IA’s scoring on the night.
As for IA’s opponent this week, the Colts also own an 0-1 record. The Lee Academy squad began their new season last Friday by dropping a narrow 13-6 loss to 5A member Magnolia Heights School of Senatobia.
Per Coach Nester, “Lee Academy always brings a physical team to the field. They look big up front with a good quarterback and running back. I believe our kids will show up ready to play.”
In this Friday’s 20th consecutive meeting between the Colts and the Colonels, the Lee Academy squad will no doubt be looking to break the eight-game win streak which IA currently owns over them.
Last season, IA defeated Lee Academy by a 37-7 margin. The Colts would move on to complete their 2020 campaign with a 4-6 record and a first round 4A playoff appearance.
This Friday’s game also marks the 51st meeting between these two schools, the longest running series in both schools’ history, and one which is deadlocked at a 25-25 won-loss mark.
