Despite his recent decision to lift the statewide mask mandate, Gov. Tate Reeves recently identified and imposed tighter restrictions by executive order for 16 of Mississippi's 82 counties that he said state health officials have deemed as being at higher risk of transmission of COVID-19.
Sunflower County is not among those listed, but Sunflower County Emergency Management Director Denny Evans said on Tuesday that the county is experiencing a slight increase in cases.
However, he said it's nothing drastic.
"They are starting to creep back up a little bit," he said.
Evans said he has noticed an upward trend over the past few weeks.
As of Wednesday morning a state website credited Sunflower County with 1,634 total cases, 49 recorded deaths with the weekly new case total of 58 representing a 4% uptick.
Evans said the public should continue to follow all local, state and federal guidelines related to the virus prevention because if people are not doing what they are supposed to, then things could get out of hand.
