Sunflower County’s total COVID-19 case count has risen by nearly 100 cases in the past week.
At press time last week, the number stood at 3,750. It was at 3,836, according to Wednesday’s report from the Mississippi State Department of Health.
The number of deaths locally from COVID stands at 99.
South Sunflower County Hospital Infectious Disease Nurse Henley Harrell said this week the hospital still has beds available, including ICU beds, and there are ventilators available as well.
Harrell said that since the state has issued and extended the mandatory participation in the system of care, the hospital has been able to transfer more serious patients out.
She said the hospital has little say in the facility patients are transferred too, and sometimes it’s nearby, and other times it could be on the opposite end of the state.
Harrell noted that “all of our hospitalizations with this wave have been unvaccinated.”
The vaccination rate for the county remained flat from last week, at 39% total vaccinated and 48% with at least one dose.
