Mississippi Delta Community College (MDCC) held its first two New Student Orientation (NS) sessions of the 2021-2022 academic year in June and early July and is gearing up for more later this month.
On June 16 and July 7, MDCC held NSO for both their university transfer and career-technical programs on the Moorhead campus. On June 23, NSO was held at the Greenville Higher Education Center (GHEC).
NSO gives students the opportunity to put any missing pieces in place in preparation for starting college for the first time. Students are able to register for fall classes, submit financial aid paperwork, meet with an advisor and learn about different campus resources.
For some students, there were small moments that made big memories.
“The highlight of the day was taking a picture and getting my college ID,” said Lania Brown, a first-time student at MDCC who will be taking general studies classes in the fall. “It really made me feel like a college student for the first time. It made it all seem real.”
For other students, being on campus and meeting faculty and staff eased nerves that can come with being in such a new environment.
“I was kind of nervous in the beginning, but over time, I became more comfortable. Everyone was so nice and friendly and really made me feel comfortable,” remembers Chandreka Stancle, who dreams of becoming a dental hygienist.
With the first few student orientation sessions in the books, MDCC is looking forward to welcoming even more students later this month. The next NSO is scheduled for July 14 at the GHEC and July 20 on the Moorhead Campus
