One football team will no longer be winless after tonight.
With Homecoming being celebrated on campus today, the 0-5 North Sunflower Academy Rebels are hoping the special night will help them garner their first win of the season.
As for their opponent, a Marvell (Ark.) Academy Eagles squad will arrive in Drew today also owning an 0-5 record and just as hungry for a victory.
Tonight’s 7 p.m. kickoff also marks the third consecutive game in which the Rebels have played against a team from Arkansas.
Unfortunately, last Friday night the young team of Rebels would suffer a 58-0 loss to DeSoto School in West Helena.
The defending 2A state champion and 5-0 Thunderbirds were as strong as advertised. DeSoto School’s victory over NSA also increased the Thunderbird win streak to 18 games in addition to recording their third shutout in as many weeks.
As for Marvell Academy, the Eagles dropped a 42-8 decision last Friday night to Lee Academy of Marianna, Arkansas.
Comparatively, that same Lee Academy team defeated NSA two weeks ago by a much narrower 26-14 margin.
Thus far this season, the Eagles have struggled to score points as they have tallied but four touchdowns through their first five games.
While NSA and Marvell Academy did not play each other last season, the Rebels claimed a 58-14 victory in the 2022 campaign.
However, the Eagles do own a 15-10 advantage over the Rebels in this series which began in the 1970 season.
