The undefeated Gentry High Rams football team will finally play a game on the road this Friday night.
Following three consecutive home dates, the 3-0 Rams will now make a short trip west on Highway 82 to Leland High School.
Kickoff for this game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Upon arrival, the Rams will take on a winless (0-3) Cubs squad which last Friday night dropped a 32-0 decision to South Delta High of Rolling Fork.
Meanwhile, that same Friday night the Rams kept their winning streak alive with a convincing 34-12 victory over visiting Humphreys County High of Belzoni.
The 2A member Cubs, however, appear to be continuing their 2021 struggles where a 2-8 final record was posted.
The Rams contributed to last year’s losing record as they defeated the Cubs by a 28-6 score.
To date, success on both sides of the line of scrimmage has again proven to be elusive for this year’s version of the Cubs.
Suffering shutouts the past two weeks, one touchdown scored in their season opener is thus far the only points the Cubs have posted on the scoreboard.
Making matters worse, the Leland squad is also giving up an average of 44 points per game to their opponents.
Historically, the Rams currently own a three-game win streak and a 9-3-1 overall record against the Cubs. This short series had its start in the 1994 season.
In last Friday's victory over Humphreys County High, the Rams broke open a scoreless game in the second quarter.
Posting the first points of the night with 10:30 remaining in the second quarter, it would be quarterback Troy Griffin tossing the first of his three touchdown passes of the game.
On this occasion the big play covered 50 yards with receiver Anthony Smith pulling the pass in.
Striking again twice within the next five minutes, the Rams received the first of Rogerick Brown's three touchdowns in the form of a 10-yard run to the end zone.
The Rams then closed out the first half of play with a Jaylon Silas three-yard touchdown run to take a 19-0 lead to the dressing room at halftime.
By the end of the third quarter, the Rams' lead had grown to a 27-0 margin after Griffin and Brown connected on a 15-yard touchdown pass.
Although the Cowboys answered with a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns, Griffin and Brown connected on a 20-yard scoring pass to take the game to its final margin.
Offensively in this game, the Rams accumulated 376 yards of total offense.
Under center, Griffin would complete eight of his 14 passes for 139 yards and three touchdowns.
On the ground, Brown would pick up 172 yards on 14 carries during his memorable night.
Defensively, the Rams limited the Cowboys to only 147 yards of total offense.
Leading this defensive effort was Vershaun Turner, who recorded nine tackles in the game.
Close behind was Johnathan Hodges with seven tackles and two sacks.
Tamodreion McClinton also made his presence known with seven tackles and a sack.
Adding six tackles was Rodarius Plain while Vashard Turner completed his night's play with five tackles.
