Another tough loss last week will be followed by a very tough opponent this week.
That is the scenario the Thomas Edwards High Tigers will find themselves in at 7 p.m. this Friday night.
Last Friday night, the now 1-7 Tigers fell on the road by an 8-0 score to the Panthers of Yazoo County High School.
This narrow loss marks the fourth time in their last five games the Tigers have lost by eight points or less.
“We are just having a hard time finishing a game,” said Edwards Head Coach Demaris Mitchell. “If we can cut out the mistakes, we would have a much better outcome.”
With that game behind them, the Edwards High squad now turns its attention to a trip this Friday to Winona High School and their own Tigers.
The stakes are high this Friday as a victory over the team from Winona is mandatory for the Edwards High squad in order to reach postseason play.
Meanwhile, Winona’s Tigers are 7-1, are chasing their second consecutive Region 3-3A championship, and are currently sitting atop the regional standings.
Last week, Winona recorded its third consecutive victory by defeating Amanda Elzy High of Greenwood by a 41-6 score.
Undefeated against teams from Mississippi, the only blemish on the Tigers’ record is a 49-14 loss to Louisiana’s Zachary High School.
Last season, Winona’s Tigers defeated the Tigers of Ruleville by a 55-16 margin.
That 2021 season saw Winona accumulate an 11-2 record before losing in the third round of the 3A State Playoffs.
