A Mississippi Delta Community College football player died from medical complications after a game last Thursday, the college announced Friday.
Emanuell Cooks of Elba, Alabama, was a freshman offensive lineman who played in the game against Hinds Community College in Raymond. The college’s statement did not specify Cooks’ cause of death.
“Our entire Trojan family is devastated by this loss,” MDCC President Steven Jones said in a press release. “At this time, our deepest thoughts and prayers are with Emanuell’s family, teammates, coaches, and friends. We will come together as a community to support one another through this tragedy.”
Head football coach Ernest T. Jones described Cooks as “a gentle giant who was always willing to do anything asked of him, often exceeding anything expected of him.
“His impact on the team reaches beyond just the playing surface. He was a leader with outstanding character and a young man with a promising future. He will truly be missed.” Jones added that the Trojans will honor Cooks during Thursday’s home game against Itawamba Community College.
On Tuesday, Sept. 23, MDCC held a private candlelight vigil in the J.T. Hall Coliseum, giving students and staff a chance to reflect, pray and grieve together.
Counseling and support services are available for all students, faculty and staff through the MDCC Office of Counseling, Career and Disability Support Services in partnership with Life Help. The college encourages anyone in need to reach out for assistance.
As the Trojan family and local community unite in sorrow and remembrance, Emanuell Cooks’ legacy lives on through the lives he touched and the memories he leaves behind.
