A mobile “License Express” unit parked outside the Sunflower County Courthouse helped dozens of residents last week apply for or renew Mississippi driver’s licenses and state identification cards without having to travel to a permanent DMV station.
The Mississippi Department of Public Safety’s License Express van operated in the courthouse parking lot from mid-morning into the afternoon, providing on-the-spot licensing services in partnership with the Mississippi Ninth Chancery Court Sub District II.
Residents lined up in near-freezing temperatures to take photos, update information and receive new cards through the walk-up service windows on the side of the customized van.
Officials said the mobile unit offers many of the same services as a brick-and-mortar driver service bureau, including first-time and renewal licenses, standard and REAL ID-compliant cards, duplicates and corrected credentials.
Customers could also update addresses and obtain state-issued identification cards needed for employment, banking and court matters, part of an effort to remove transportation and documentation barriers for rural residents.
The outreach was organized by the 9th Chancery Court Sub District II team, which has promoted the mobile unit as “a different kind of court” focused on connecting individuals with resources that support long-term stability.
Chancery staff members worked alongside DPS personnel to check paperwork, answer questions and direct people through the line, underscoring the court’s role in linking families and treatment-court participants to essential identification services.
Organizers have staged similar License Express visits to other counties and schools this year, and the chancery team has announced a follow-up stop in Humphreys County in January 2026.
State officials say the goal is to expand the mobile program so that more Mississippians can obtain secure identification needed for driving, voting, work and accessing court and social services close to where they live.
