The Town of Inverness came together for a day of celebration and homage during Kirk Price Day, named in honor of the beloved longtime Sunflower County coach who passed away suddenly last year.
This day brought the community together with bouncers, horseback riding, barbecue and softball in honor of Price, who many may know as Coach Price.
Price had a significant impact on the community of Inverness and beyond with over 30 years of coaching experience and genuine interaction with the local youth.
He most recently coached alongside Chico Potts as assistant coach of the Gentry Boys Basketball Team. The joyous day was concluded with the reading and acknowledgment of the Town of Inverness’ resolution to make September 21 Kirk Price Day.
In efforts to honor Price after his passing, and with the blessings of his family, Dreifus Smith, founder of Fresh Start Community Program sought out to make Kirk Price Day official.
He remembered the impact Kirk had on the community through mentorship.
“God gave the vision on this this year, to give Kirk Price his own day, because he did so much for the community,” said Smith.
The resolution was approved by the Board of Aldermen and Kirk Price’s legacy is now in black and white and embedded in the town of Inverness.
“Inverness got together to help fund and support this event to make sure it got together” said Smith.
The day was a success as hundreds of people came out to celebrate.
“A lot of people came out and showed love, and just seeing the smiles really just brightened up my day and it was just a happy day for everyone,” said Smith.
Demetria Price, Price’s sister, enjoyed most of all the love and support that people came out to show during the special day.
“He worked for kids not only in his community but all kids he came in contact with, kids in Washington County, Leflore County, Bolivar County” said Demetria Price. “It’s just good to keep his name alive because he worked for the betterment of other people. He wanted to see any child doing something positive.”
Price’s legacy will definitely live on in and around the town of Inverness.
