September marks national rice month in the U.S.
Rice is primarily grown in six states including Arkansas, Missouri, Louisiana, Mississippi, California and Texas, and over 80% of the rice produced in the U.S. is consumed locally.
This makes it very sustainable and affordable for both the farmers and local economy. Rice production began in Mississippi in the late 1940s and grew rapidly over the next decade and into the industry we have today.
That industry is worth over $180 million in revenue inside the state. Once rice is harvested some fields are flooded to provide a food source for waterfowl that are overwintering in the south.
Rice is a great choice of food to add to any meal.
Each tiny grain is packed full of vitamins and minerals that will supply you with energy while being very low in total fat.
Now as everyone waits on the remnants of former hurricane Harvey to pass through, think while you are at the grocery store or out on a weekend dinner date to add rice to a meal.
You will be glad you did.
You can also join hundreds of others sharing the love for rice on Sept. 15th at 11 a.m. at the Walter Sillers Coliseum in Cleveland. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $5.
Also, don’t forget the next time you run across a farmer to thank them for all they do in helping feed and clothe the growing population.
