On Monday, the Sunflower County Board of Supervisors voted to accept the recommendation of Sunflower County Circuit Clerk Carolyn Hamilton and appointed Porchia Anthony, wife of District 31 Representative Otis Anthony II, to fill out the unexpired term for Sunflower County District 2 Election Commissioner Eloise Harris.
Anthony was sworn in immediately and was present for Tuesday night’s election process. The commissioners are responsible for conducting general and special elections in conjunction with the circuit clerk.
Among other things, helping maintain the voter roll is one of the main duties of the election commission. And they also sit in as advisors to the judge on primary election contests.
Harris reportedly resigned for unspecified medical reasons.

The county lawmakers voted to receive a new ambulance purchased from MedStat and subsequently agreed to assign the Ford T-250 model transit van over to the emergency service provider.
At its September meeting, the group voted to accept an $84,796 proposal from MedStat, which is also the county’s emergency medical service provider, to supply the new vehicle to the county.
Some board members had expressed concern that MedStat was supplying the ambulance that it would be using; however it was revealed that MedStat was the only bidder for the vehicle.
Although it was discussed briefly, no action was taken on the handling of the ambulance being replaced by the new purchase. In times past, MedStat has reportedly bought the older medical transports from the county.
Attorney Johnny McWilliams said he has to do some research to find out how the process was actually conducted before continuing with the dispersion.

County Engineer Ron Cassada said the work on Main Street in Drew is nearly complete. He said the surface will have three asphalt layers; the first one was to be done on Monday, the second on today and the final “lift” on Friday. “So the road will essentially be completed this week, depending on the weather, and then after that just the striping.” He said they will have to wait a couple of weeks before the striping can be done.
