Longtime legislator David Baria officially eliminated opponent Howard Sherman in the Democratic primary runoff on Tuesday, and he will faceoff against Republican incumbent Roger Wicker this fall.
Sherman, a venture capitalist and husband to Mississippi native and actress Sela Ward, forced a runoff after the June 5 primary vote, but he was only able to secure 41 percent of the vote on Tuesday, while Baria captured 59 percent.
Both elections notably had low turnout.
In Sunflower County, Sherman carried the vote with 53 percent (353) of the vote to Baria’s 47 percent (313), according to the Sunflower County Circuit Clerk’s office.
Baria, an attorney and Minority Leader in the Mississippi House of Representatives, will face Wicker, who has served in the U.S. Senate seat since he was appointed in 2007 and subsequently won a special election the following year, as well as a second full term in 2012.
