The Sunflower County election commissioners have convened and the results from the August 6 Democratic primary election have been certified and in Sunflower County the numbers stack up as such.
In the Senate District 13 race, Sarita Simmons led Sunflower County with 1220 votes or 38.62 percent followed by John Marshall Alexander with 708 votes, 22.41 percent. They will meet up again in the August 27 primary runoff.
Charles Modley came in third in Sunflower County with 702 votes or 22.22 percent, followed by Tony G. Anderson who had 288 votes or 9.12 percent and Carl Brinkley who ended up with 238 votes or 7.53 percent.
The District 13 senator represents portions of Sunflower, Bolivar and Tallahatchie counties.
In the Senate District 22 race in Sunflower County, Mark S. Buckner Sr. garnered 45.76 percent of the votes with 556 votes, Ruffin Smith was second with 255 votes or 20.99 percent, and Joseph C. Thomas Sr. had 177 votes or 14.57 percent followed by Ermea “E.J.” Russell with 171 votes or 14.07 percent.
Colton Thornton received 55 votes or 4.53 percent in that race in Sunflower County. However, due to the court-ordered redrawing of the district it now includes parts of Yazoo and Madison counties in addition to Sunflower and in the overall tally, Joseph C. Thomas and Ruffin Smith ended up in a runoff with 32.5 percent and 21.2 percent of the votes respectively pushing Buckner to third place with 20.1 percent of the overall votes.
In the District 31 State Representative race, incumbent Otis L Anthony II, gained 74.88 percent of the votes with 2,358 ballots cast for him and Jeanette Knighten-Washington had 786 votes for a total of 24.96 percent.
In the County Attorney's race Gwendolyn D. Jimison had 60.03 percent of the votes in Sunflower County with 2,523 and Alsee McDaniel had 1,672 votes total for 39.78 percent.
In the Sheriff's race, James Haywood earned 3,285 votes or 71.34 percent followed by Roger Simpson with 770 votes or 16.72 percent. They was followed by Tommy C. Boykin with 11.72 percent of the votes with 542 votes.
In the Supervisors’ races, in District 1, Glenn Donald led by 26 votes with 469, earning him 51.43 percent, over James Sample with 443 votes or 48.57 percent. In District 2, Levi Ford Jr. led with 48.5 percent—a total of 500 votes—followed by Riley Rice with 435 votes or 42.19 percent. Dana Myrick Jr. had 96 votes for 9.31 percent.
The District 3 race featured all newcomers. Ben Gaston earned 48.49 percent with 402 votes followed by Keith Spealman with 242 votes or 29.19 percent and they will face each other in the August 27 primary runoff. Joseph Wilson Sr. had 184 votes or 22.2 percent.
In the District 4 race, Anthony Clark led with 760 votes or 72.52 percent over James L. Burton with 287 votes for 27.39 percent.
And in District 5, Gloria Dickerson commanded 70.62 percent of the votes with 560 going in her favor over contender Jack Griffin, who had 233 votes or 29.38 percent.
In the Northern Justice Court Judge’s race Lester Williams had 612 votes or 28.31 percent and will runoff against Lisa Bell, who had 563 votes with 26.04 percent. Annette Washington-Fields followed the two of them with 419 votes or 19.38 percent and Joshua B. Austin with 300 votes or 13.88 percent, Cynthia Sprouse with 139 votes for 6.43 percent and Don Brown with 126 votes or 5.83 percent followed her.
In the Southern District Constable’s race, incumbent James Lee bested challenger Karen Farrow 1,251 votes, 54.44 percent to 1,046 votes, 45.52 percent. In the Northern District race, incumbent Mike Myers with 1,370 votes, 60.97 percent, defeated Thomas Townsend who had 644 votes or 28.66 percent and Edward Dwight Lucas who had 233 votes or 10.37 percent.
The winners of the District 13 and 22 races will face Republican and Independent rivals in the November general election as will Sheriff James Haywood and District 5 Supervisor Gloria Dickerson.
