On Sept. 11, State Sen. Willie Simmons and six members of his team (John "Bear" Lloyd, Reginald Simmons, Bernest Clark, Leslie Gregory, Brian Gunn and Bryant Kimbrough) traveled to Houston Texas to deliver over 85,000 pounds of supplies and canned food to assist those in need.
Simmons said the relief effort was a success thanks to support from multiple Delta communities, people and entities including, The Senator's Place, Vic Byas, Mayor Billy Nowell, President Bill LaForge, FEED Inc., Bryant Kimbrough Trucking, Greshman Petroleum, BCCAA and the Faith Based Community; DONORS and Volunteers who supported the Harvey Relief Drive.
The Senator's Place also cooked a Bar-B-Que dinner for 1,000 first responders, volunteers and local citizens.
Mayor Sylvester Turner of Houston presented Simmons a proclamation and thanked him and the citizens of Mississippi for their generosity.
"It is this kind of love thy neighbor and being a Good Samaritan attitude of individuals like you that will heal and rebuild Houston and the Lone Star State of Texas,” Turner said.
The supplies were delivered to Pastor David Paul Landrew of Loving Word Fellowship Church. Pastor Landrew stated that "these 85,000 pounds of food and supplies will go to the elderly, homeless and needy to provide them with hope and let them know that they are cared for and loved by others". Pastor Landrew compared the citizens of the Mississippi Delta to the acts of the Good Samaritan and manna falling from Heaven to feed the hungry.
Texas State Senators, Sylvia R. Garcia and Borris L. Miles both extended their gratitude to Senator Simmons and the citizens of Mississippi for their generosity and support.
