The Sunflower County Extension Service has been ramping up the offerings to the area, but whether it’s youth activities or sewing classes, much of this would not be possible without the Community Fund.
The Chamber recently launched its annual drive for the Community Fund, which raises money that will go to around nine local orgainzations, 4-H Clubs and Extension Service being the recipients of some of the money.
“We would not do all of the stuff (we do). We would have very little offerings without it,” said Alex Deason, Extension officer for Sunflower County.
Deason said a lot of the money that has been donated to 4-H and the Extension office has gone toward youth activities like shooting sports, which had two participants when it began. Now, thanks to Community Fund money, there are nearly 50 participants who are able to get the equipment needed to get started.
Money also goes toward the 4-H Scout School, and Community Fund dollars have also been spent to buy six sewing machines for area youth and adults interested in sewing classes, said Extension coordinator for Sunflower County Ann Twiner.
She said the money also helped this summer with the Jr. Chef program, cake decorating, and the office is hoping to use future funds to help purchase supplies for robotics.
The goal of this year’s drive is $30,000.
Money given to the Community Fund will be handled by an executive committee, which will review applications from participating organizations.
