In a press release dated January 8, Sunflower County Coroner Heather Burton announced the death of another inmate at the state penitentiary at Parchman; however, Burton stated that this latest loss of life was not due to murder.
She said Coahoma County Coroner Scotty Meredith responded to the call and would be handling the investigation.
“I have spoken with Mr. Meredith and was told the death was not a homicide,” she said.
In the release Burton wrote, “I am offering this to you as the facts of this case.” Burton said she was notified early Wednesday morning, by a chaplain with Religious Services at the prison, of the death of offender A.D. Mills. Burton said Mills was pronounced dead at 12:41 a.m. at Merit Health Hospital in Clarksdale.
“These are the facts that I have been given. Please direct any questions you have regarding Mr. Mills to the Coahoma County Coroner,” said Burton. She reportedly got the call from Meredith at 2:28 a.m., Wednesday. Mills’ age or hometown was not mentioned.
Burton concluded her statement with, “My thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Mills’ family. Please join me in saying a prayer for them and pray for the safety and well-being of the MDOC Corrections Staff, Mississippi Highway Patrol, Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, the inmates, and anyone else that is aiding in the efforts at Parchman. May God bless you all.”
