Things are progressing on some of the county’s road construction projects.
At Monday’s Sunflower County Board of Supervisor’s meeting the county officials reviewed and approved subcontracts related to road construction on north Airport Road and Sykes-Tindall Road plus an engineering estimate for Three Mile Lake Road and Moorhead Road.
Engineer Ron Cassada also responded to a letter presented to the board from Drew resident Johnny Gorrell regarding the condition of the Drew Merigold Road.
“There’s nothing that can be done about the Drew street because that’s the detour,” Cassada said. “There is no other way to detour there during construction and that will move as they finish.”
As for the progress being made on the construction project, Cassada told the board that the three water leaks that developed on the Drew Park Avenue project have been repaired and that the curb and gutter work should hopefully begin next week. He also said work was being done on the utilities relocation.
Supervisor Gloria Dickerson wanted to know when the citizens would be able to drive on the street.
“They started riding on it then they were in the contractor’s way, so he had to get them to move everything so he could get in,” Cassada said.
He said they would now have to likely wait until all work is completed. He said the citizens were parking on the side of the road and the contractor had to wait until they moved their vehicles to do the work. Cassada explained that the project was under the contractor’s liability, so if there were a problem, it would be under his bond.
Dickerson then wanted to know if the street would be open in time for Drew Day on October 14 and asked the engineer to give his “best guess.” Cassada said, “I’ve quit guessing about Drew.” He added, “Probably not.”
Cassada said it would depend on how quickly the subcontractor who is doing the cement work can get it done. He said once it is poured it has to set for a minimum of seven days. However, Cassada did predict, “It will be open this winter.”
