W. Dewayne Richardson, District Attorney for the Fourth Circuit Court District, comprised of Washington, Sunflower and Leflore counties, said in a release this week that offenders who have written bad checks and have not paid their fines have until March 31 to do so.
After that, arrests may follow.
“Thereafter, we will have no other alternative but to release all indictments to the Washington, Sunflower and Leflore County Sheriff’s Departments for immediate arrest and prosecution,” Richardson said. “Be reminded…we are a law enforcement agency and will pursue felony worthless checks until the debt is zero. There is no statute of limitations on this matter. Plainly stated, if a check was written in 1980, we will take action and aggressively pursue charges in 2020.”
Richardson says he and his office stand ready to enforce Section 97-19-55 of the Mississippi Code, commonly known as the Mississippi Bad Check Law.
“As your District Attorney, I have a strong commitment to making sure those who steal through bad checks are held accountable. Being a former business owner, I know and understand the frustration of receiving a bad check and want you to know that our Bad Check Unit is here to assist you in your efforts to collect.”
Those who owe are urged to contact the Office of the District Attorney to avoid the embarrassment of being arrested on a felony worthless check. Make all payments in the form of a money order to: Worthless Check Unit, P.O. Box 426, Greenville, MS 38701. Again, the deadline is Tuesday, March 31, 2020.
Business owners who would like to know more about how the Office of the District Attorney can assist with collections, may contact the office and speak with the Check Unit Director, Markeda Brown at 662-378-2105, via email at badcheckcollector@gmail.com or visit the website at www.msdeltada.com.
