The observance of Columbus Day by the postal service will provide Sunflower County residents with a little extra time to submit their voter registration forms by mail.
Anyone planning to register by mail to vote in the upcoming Nov. 6 election must have the completed form submitted and postmarked no later than 5 p.m., Tuesday Oct. 9.
However, in-office registration must be completed no later than 5 p.m., Monday October 8. Sunflower County Circuit Clerk Carolyn Hamilton said the clerk’s office will be open on Monday until 5 p.m. In addition, the clerk’s office will open on Saturday Oct. 6 from 8 a.m. to 12 noon for voter registration purposes only.
Voter registration forms can be picked up at the circuit clerk’s office or printed from their new website, sunflowercircuitclerk.com. Once the form is printed and completed it can be faxed or mailed. The fax number is: 662-887-7077 and it must be received by close of business on Oct. 8. Forms can be mailed to P.O. Box 880, Indianola.
The Nov. 6 ballot will feature a special election to complete the existing term for the House District 31 seat vacated by the retirement of Sara Richardson-Thomas, eight people have qualified for that position. Only Torrey Bell managed to qualify to finish out the District 4 SCCSD board position left vacant by the passing of Daisy Morgan.
He was appointed to the position in January and because he was the lone qualifier that special election will be suspended and Bell will hold the position until the end of 2019.
Hamilton said she also wants the public to know that her new website has a wealth of other information and future election results will also be posted there.
