The votes are in and the ballots have been tallied and the decision has been made.
The name for the soon-to-be renovated Moorhead Middle School that will house grades pre-k through eighth is Moorhead Central School.
The students and community were given the option of naming the new facility and determining the school’s mascot and colors. They voted to keep Cobras as the mascot and selected blue and red as the school’s colors.
Superintendent Miskia Davis along with William Murphy, SCCSD director of personnel and student affairs, made the announcement at Thursday's board of trustees meeting in Inverness and the board voted to accept the designation.
The district held a special meeting back in November in Moorhead to allow community input but only a handful of parents and community leaders showed up. Although community input was sought, it was made clear that the students would ultimately make the decision.
Moorhead Middle School is closed for the 2017-18 term due to the construction work that began in the fall and the students are temporarily being bussed to school in Inverness. The facility is expected to be complete and inspected and ready to move into by July 15, 2018, in time for the start of the new school year.
Murphy said the Sunflower County Consolidated School District thanks all for their participation, and it owes a special "Thank You" to the Moorhead City Hall for working with them during this process.
