A Drew man is behind bars at the Sunflower County jail awaiting bond after being charged with second-degree murder in the death of 33-year-old Mario Davis on Friday.
Carlos Dante Lakes 26, 168 Roosevelt St., Drew was arrested and charged after county sheriff’s deputies were called to the Broadway Terrace Apartments around 12:30 a.m. Friday morning.
According to Sheriff James Haywood, the shooting occurred near the entrance of the complex and Davis suffered multiple gunshot wounds, however he is unsure of exactly how many. Haywood said the coroner's report indicated that there were more than a dozen holes in Davis’ body. The corpse has been sent to Jackson for autopsy and the official cause of death will be determined by that. “And forensics will play a big part in this too,” Haywood said.
According to him, the shooting stemmed from an argument over a cell phone that escalated into the lethal confrontation. Although the men were allegedly acquaintances, the level of their familiarity was not discussed. “It's just a tragedy anyway you look at it,” Haywood said.
On the night of the incident, Haywood said Davis was transported by personal vehicle to the North Sunflower County Medical Center for treatment but was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
Two were weapons reportedly taken into evidence. Haywood said Lakes had a 9mm handgun when he was arrested, and a .380 handgun was found at the scene.
Lakes had his initial appearance before Judge Stafford Shurden on Saturday and was scheduled to be in justice court on Tuesday for his preliminary hearing. Bond was withheld until the hearing.
According to Haywood, Lakes doesn’t have any known prior arrests and he is reportedly being represented by Jackson attorney Ottowa E Carter Jr.
