There’s new fitness equipment at East Sunflower Elementary.
On Oct. 18, the school and the district hosted a ceremony to celebrate a new fitness grant that was awarded to the school by Project Fit America, an organization that promotes health and wellness across the country.
The $28,969 grant provided fitness equipment and curriculum to ESE and the patriotic-themed program included remarks from SCCSD Superintendent Miskia Davis, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation representative Eugenia King, Earl Liddell, physical education teacher, Sawanda Washington, principal, SCCSD School Board Member Emma Golden and Sunflower Mayor Desiree Norwood.
Speakers highlighted the importance of physical fitness and healthy eating for the Sunflower community and the event also included a ceremonial ribbon cutting and student demonstrations on the outdoor fitness equipment.
School officials said the new equipment was a much-needed upgrade to the East Sunflower Elementary facilities, and will continue to provide students and community members with opportunities to improve their health and fitness for years to come.
