Agents with the Mississippi State Extension Service recently held their annual luncheon for local volunteers, county and state officials. The purpose of the gathering was to share information on the various programs and activities and update the stakeholders on the progress of their programs.
Agents Ann Twiner, Alex Deason and Alexis Hamilton each spoke to the group about their various endeavors and the impact those undertakings have made in the community.
In addition to the long-standing 4-H activities and FarmTastic, the extension service also conducts many youth and adult camps and classes such as sewing, master gardening, robotics, cooking, classes on finances, diabetes health and fitness and nutrition.
Twiner also shared that they provide ServSafe classes and added that if it were not one of their services clients would have to travel to Jackson to get certification.
In association with the many indoor activities, the local agents also conduct a host of outdoor activities that include summer camps, archery and shooting sports as well as water safety classes.
The presentation included photographic images and graphs and charts to help corroborate their results. Some of the photos featured area youth who have performed outstandingly in their particular area and have qualified to compete in national competitions.
Deason said their activities provide more than just the skills associated with the interest. He said a great deal of it has to do with relationships. “They learn a lot of stuff like how to play with others," he said.
