Although the Gentry High School band and choir members have been earning scholarships all along, Principal Willie Bolden said on Friday that it was the first time they have stepped into the spotlight with a formal pronouncement of their intent to continue their musical careers at the collegiate level.
Eighteen seniors, along with their parents, other family members and classmates, assembled in the school library to proclaim their individual designation and listen as his or her colleagues made theirs.
While the decisions were not evenly distributed, the nods were split between Mississippi Valley State University and Coahoma Community College with eight of the nine senior band members and five of the nine senior choir members marching off towards Coahoma.
The remaining five are headed down to the Valley.
Band members Ronald Ayles, Jai’Quishalyn Williams, Zyrlethia Loyd, Ja’Tarri Lee, Derrick Davis, Mh’Kenzy Davis, Lamorris Ervin and Kierra Shanklin chose CCC, while Christian Scott picked MVSU.
From the choir, Destiny Malone chose MVSU, KiYonna Howard—CCC, Essence Baggett—MVSU, Joy Gatlin—MVSU, David Hull—CCC, Felicity McClinton—CCC, Ikia Crisler—CCC, Nia Petty—MVSU and Denisha Scott—CCC.
