Veteran teacher opens new business geared toward getting elementary kids to the next level
Rose Giachelli is on a mission to help local kids learn to read.
As a middle school history teacher, Giachelli has seen first-hand the effects of students entering middle school without having proper reading comprehension skills.
“I have learned that so many students struggle in that particular area because of lack of support, Giachelli told The E-T in a recent interview. “It starts at an early age, and if you don’t catch them at an early age, you have lost them. It’s kind of hard to teach a teenager how to read. You have to catch them in the early grades.”
Giachelli held a grand opening ceremony for her new reading tutorial business this week, the Giachelli PR, LLC Reading Tutorial Program, and she hopes to be tutoring children at the first of the year.
She had hoped to have students in her office at 612 N. Sunflower Ave. Suite 18 sooner, but she is allowing more time for the most recent COVID-19 surge to get under more control.
She will serve primarily third through eighth grade students, she said.
Giachelli said the first month will be free for children, followed by a fee of $150 per child per month. She said she is open to making payment arrangements with parents who cannot pay the full amount up front.
This all driven by her goal of helping more students learn to read by the time they exit the third grade.
“I love what I do,” she said. “I have a passion for children, and I have a passion for them going on to the next level as far as reading skills are concerned.”
The former Parent of the Year turned middle school teacher said her own school was at an F status at one point, but that all changed in the past two years.
“We worked really hard, and we moved that school from an F to three points from a B,” Giachelli said. “That motivated me.”
Giachelli said she saw that students in Sunflower County had the ability to move the needle, and she believes they can do much better than a C rating.
“Something has to be done outside of the classroom,” she said.
Giachelli said many students do not comprehend what they are reading, and many parents do not either. That is where she comes in.
“When they are reading, they are not comprehending what they are reading,” she said. “If you could just break down the passages to them, and break down those vocabulary words to them, they will be able to grasp it and roll with it.”
Giachelli is married to Douglas Giachelli and she has two children, Chelsea and Chauncey Walker.
