With the Indianola democratic primary election less than six weeks away the Indianola Municipal Democratic Executive Committee would like to point out two very important election-related issues.
First, the deadline to qualify to vote in this year’s primary election is Saturday Sept. 9, by 12 noon. The Indianola City Clerk’s office will be open until noon on that day only for the purpose of voter registration. A person who does not register by that deadline will not be allowed to vote in the Oct. 10 primary.
Second, the city clerk’s office has begun taking applications for mail-in absentee voting during regular business hours, weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Anyone who needs to vote absentee by mail should call the clerk at 887-3101 to request the service and if they are unable to make the call themselves, an immediate family member or legal guardian/agent may make the request on their behalf, preferably in person, but if not, then by phone is permissible.
The IMDEC encourages the citizens desiring to vote absentee by mail to do so as soon as possible since only the ballots received via mail by 5 p.m. Monday Oct. 9 will be counted. In-office absentee voting will begin at the city hall as soon as the printed ballots are ready.
Polls will open at 7 a.m. Tuesday Oct. 10 for the primary election and in the event of a runoff, it would be held Tuesday Oct. 31. The committee has officially certified the following candidates as its nominees in the primary election:
For Mayor
Vivian Michelle Byas Jenkins
Mario Robinson
Steve Rosenthal (Incumbent)
For Ward 1 Alderman
Gary V. Fratesi (Incumbent)
For Ward 2 Alderman
Linda Smith Myles
Darrell W. Simpson
For Ward 3 Alderman
Rickey D. Hoskins
Harvey Watson, Jr
Ruben Wood (Incumbent)
For Ward 4 Alderman
Marvin “Starvin’ Marvin” Elder
Sara L. Woods
Dana “Danny” Myrick (Incumbent)
For Ward 5 Alderman
Sam Brock, Jr
Ricardo Gibson
Indianola Municipal Democratic Executive Committee
(At large, vote for 3)
Cynthia Pilar Armstrong
Foster D. King
David Rushing
The general election is set for Tuesday Dec. 12 and as of the qualifying deadline, Jimmy Smith is the only independent candidate who has been certified for the office of mayor. This means that on that date he will face the winner of the Democratic Primary Election for the mayor’s position, which will be the sole contested race on the ballot.
