The Sunflower County Search & Rescue volunteers went fishing on Sunday evening after passersby spotted a car bobbing up and down in the Quiver River between Moorhead and Sunflower.
SAR president Stan Bennett said a couple out for an afternoon drive spotted the late model 4-wheel-drive Jeep Cherokee and called authorities.
Bennett said he got the call around 4:01 p.m., and when they arrived on scene, Matt Tharpe, Morgan Hudson and Justin Griffin manned the boat and motored out to the partially sunken SUV.
Bennett said they broke the window out to see if anyone was in the vehicle and after determining that it was unoccupied, they proceeded to drag the auto closer to shore so the wrecker could fish it out.
The operation took nearly four hours to complete, according to Bennett and he estimates that it had been in the water for several days.
