Sunflower County’s division of the National Association of Triads, Inc., is asking local businesses and the public’s help in providing for its first of hopefully many senior citizens’ banquets.
Although the specific details have not been ironed out, the group has instituted a May 1 deadline for donations and an April 15 goal for announcing the date, time and location.
In a news release from Sheriff James Haywood and the Triad’s committee, it states that they are planning a dinner for the senior citizens with the hope of being able to honor each with a “gift of love.”
The letter states that the donations can be in the form of a monetary contribution to help with the dinner or the donor can purchase as many gifts as they choose.
Although this is Sunflower County’s first Triad group, the NATI has been around since the mid to late 1980s; when representatives from the American Association of Retired Persons, the International Association of Chiefs of Police, and the National Sheriffs’ Association came together to work out a way to help keep older adults safe from crime.
The local group said they have a call list of more than 100 seniors at the sheriff’s department that it calls every day to conduct welfare verifications.
In addition to attempting to educate, assist, support and unite the older adult population, the Triads said they are committed to keeping all seniors safe and informed by connecting them with law enforcement, community agencies, and individuals to help identify problem areas in their communities.
Triad groups are typically comprised of law enforcement agencies, older adults, and community groups who work in partnership to promote senior safety and reduce the fear of crime that older adults sometime experience.
The Sunflower County Board of Supervisors, Haywood and his department, the various police departments and a collection of the county’s senior citizens are, “working together to save lives in Sunflower County.”
Anyone who would like to have their name, the name of a family member, friend or neighbor added to the list of those they check on every day, please call them at 662-887-2121 to give them your contact information.
