A two-car accident on U.S. 49 early Saturday morning claimed the lives of two Drew residents. According to Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesperson Sgt. Ronald Shive, Brandon Cortez Young, 27 and Elnora Q. Sisson, 56, both of Drew were killed instantly when the 1986 Buick Regal, driven by Young, collided head on with the 2010 Nissan Maxima Sisson was driving.
Shakonda Harris 41 of Drew, a passenger in the car with Sisson, received only minor injuries. She was taken to North Sunflower Medical Center in Ruleville where she was treated and released. Sisson and Harris were both employees of NSMC who had reportedly just finished work and were on their way home when the accident occurred.
The crash happened around 1:40 a.m., approximately 3.5 miles north of Ruleville near Academy Road. Shive said preliminary indications are that Young was heading south when his car crossed over into the northbound lane and impacted Sisson’s Maxima.
Shive said the brunt of the impact was concentrated mainly to the driver’s side of each vehicle. He said Harris was wearing her seatbelt and all of the airbags on the Maxima deployed, there were no airbags on Young’s Regal.
The accident is still under investigation.
