William Green Poindexter can add another accolade to an already lengthy resume.
A lifetime of service to the town of Inverness and to the state of Mississippi earned Poindexter Inverness’ Citizen of the Year award.
The announcement was made during the annual Inverness Citizen of the Year Banquet on Tuesday night.
Held at Town Market & Restaurant in Inverness, a full house heard updates on the chamber’s current plans for the holiday season, followed by its guest speaker, renowned storyteller Walt Grayson.
After Grayson, a Greenville native, wrapped up his talk, which included multiple stories about the Delta, Inverness Mayor David Smith introduced Poindexter as Citizen of the Year.
According to Smith, Poindexter was the youngest mayor ever elected in Inverness in the early 1970s. He led the town in its recovery from the famous 1971 tornado, which killed many of the town’s citizens and decimated hundreds of houses.
He was later elected to the state House of Representatives, where he served for 17 years.
He served as a liaison to farmers on the late Gov. Kirk Fordice’s staff, and he serves today on the Board of State Tax Appeals.
